Watching math movies are sometime boring, so I went on a
search for a math movie that was both entertaining and educating. What I found
was a corky little movie with a Disney title: Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land (1959). This movie is about 27
minutes long and worth the watch. We find Donald on a journey through math
explorations from the history of Pythagoras to conic section, as well as many
other topics. The film applies mathematic concepts to common use items.

Although this movie may not dive into the concepts deeply,
its brief mention of concepts revitalizes a youthful interest in mathematics
that I began to feel I lost. Sometimes, in the upper levels of math, the need
to explore certain concepts deeply wears on the student mind; however, Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land lightens
the rigor, if only for a moment. It is a fun film to watch even if it is geared
toward adolescents. So relax for a while and watch Donald explore math topics
in a light way. I walked away from the video repeating to myself, “What luck
for the Duck.”

This is cool, although personally I think that they should have used Mickey Mouse instead of Donald Duck because sometimes his voice can be hard to understand. I think that this is a video that everyone should watch, mathematics major or not. So many people question and wonder why they have to fulfill specific mathematics requirements in school. Believe it or not, Donald Duck taught me something in this video. I was unaware of how much of a role mathematics played in several different games that I have played throughout my life.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting video. I had seen the video a long time ago when I was little and I really never understood and was able to grasp all of the topics covered in the video. Now that my mathematical knowledge has grown I can comprehend everything that was presented in the video. The concepts that were discussed in this video were broken down and explained fully. I recommend this video to all mathematicians so they can see some of the main topics in mathematics and how different concepts can relate to one another and to things in the real world.
